Risk Factors of Gout

Certainly, no one wants to develop a case of gout. This pesky affliction of the foot is essentially a type of arthritis in the foot. There can be inflammation as a result of the condition, and pain is another common symptom associated with gout. Many patients are interested to know what risk factors typically put an individual at an increased risk of developing gout. The answer is that several different things can cause gout. For example, certain risk factors that are associated with gout include being an older man, being obese, and having a genetic disposition to the foot condition. Additionally, many of the gout risk factors concern dietary choices, specifically, the consumption of red meat, such as pork and beef, which might put one at an increased risk of developing gout. Other foods such as seafood, alcohol, and liver are also associated with gout. If you are suffering from gout, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today for treatment and prevention options.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Lakeside Foot and Ankle Center. Our practitioners will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is considered to be a deformity that can happen for genetic reasons, or from wearing shoes that are too tight. A bunion is a bony growth which forms on the side of the big toe. Severely protruding bunions may cause the other toes to shift toward each other as well, and larger shoes may need to be worn. Some people have corns and calluses that grow on top of the toes, as a result of the friction that is caused when they touch the top of the shoe. Wearing high heels may cause a bunion to form from the limited amount of room the toes have to move in. Relief may be found with mild bunions when a protective pad is worn over them. Some patients have chosen to wear custom-made orthotics, which may help the foot to feel more comfortable in the shoe. If you have a bunion, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the treatment option that is best for you.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact one of our podiatrists of Lakeside Foot and Ankle Center. Our practitioners can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

Hammertoe and Flip-Flops

Hammertoe is a particular condition of the foot in which the joints of the toes point upward in a “v” shape at the center of the toe. The toe ultimately has a hammer-like shape. This condition can be caused by many different things. Specifically, wearing flip-flops may contribute to the onset of hammertoe. When an individual wears flip-flops, they must essentially scrunch up their toes to keep the flip-flop on their feet. This is an unnatural and strenuous task for the toes. As a result, the muscles in the toes might experience an imbalance. Hammertoe can result. If you are someone that wears flip-flops frequently, you might be at an increased risk of developing foot conditions such as hammertoe. It is suggested that you reach out to a foot care specialist such as a podiatrist to receive treatment or attention.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Lakeside Foot and Ankle Center. Our practitioners will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

What Is an Ankle Sprain?

An ankle sprain is an overstretched or torn ligament in the ankle that can happen for various reasons. One may step off a curb unexpectedly or land on the foot in the wrong direction. Common symptoms that many people experience can include immediate swelling and bruising, and it is often difficult to walk. Sometimes a popping sound may be heard if the sprain is severe, and the pain can be debilitating. A diagnosis is needed to determine if the injury is a fracture or a sprain. An X-ray will be taken, followed by beginning the correct treatment. Ankle sprains will heal faster when the foot is elevated and the weight is kept off the affected foot as much as possible. Many people choose to use a walking aid that is generally effective in restoring mobility. If you have ankle pain or fear you may have sprained it, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can confirm this and offer you the correct treatment options

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact one of our podiatrists from Lakeside Foot and Ankle Center. Our practitioners can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.
